![]() It doesn't do heavy metal distortion but it has a great blues tone and cleans up great. The "Soak" setting is Carvin's Preamp Gain. If it had a spring tank, it would be the best amp I have ever played. The only thing I don't like about it is the digital reverb. I have a Carvin Vintage 16 amp with the Celestion Vintage 30 speaker upgrade. ![]() I've not tried any of Carvin's cabs but I've heard they are quality, very lightweight and sound decent. The 1x12 C-Rex sounds the best for what I mostly do but I sometimes like using the RedBear when I need loud and messy. I play out of either a RedBear 4x12 (I think they have Celestion G12s) or a custom built 1x12 open back with an Eminence C-Rex. It's been very durable so far and they are EXTREMELY easy to service, the online guides that Carvin puts out are very helpful and biasing only requires a multi-meter, no special probes/connectors.Īt performance volumes it sounds great, the cleans get really rich and creamy once the tubes fully warm up and the distortion is satisfactory, sounds great when I drive it with a Big Muff. I had the Sovtek preamp and power tubes replaced with JJs, and am thinking about switching out the ECC83s in V4 & 3 with 5751 (I have a couple JJs 5751s already) right now it sounds much better then stock, but that's my personal taste. It might not be able to reproduce many sounds exactly but when matched with the right cab/speakers it'll get you in the ball park. Very versatile, "jack-of-all-trades" type amp. EMG's didn't (and I believe still do not) make bezels for their pickups but I found a site online that makes bevels for the EMG 707's.I have a V3M, I really REALLY like that amp. That was not a problem at all, just had to be very careful. For the 7 string, some routing was required since the EMG's will not fit the hole that the Carvin pickups occupy (7 string only, 6 string EMG 81's, 85's, etc. In fact I'm seriously thinking about ordering another very very soon, another 7 string. ![]() That one was number 2 so I still bought another one after that. I currently have 3 and will never get rid of them. I had no problems at all, although it did suck having to wait a couple more months! I said "No way, build another one" and they said "Ok". After they inspected it, they confirmed my suspicions and said that they could fill the holes with dowels and re-drill new ones (for the Floyd Rose). I don't know how, but during manufacturing the Floyd Rose was installed offset slightly from being in-line with the neck. Got out my straight edge and it was perfectly straight. I thought maybe the neck warped in the few days of shipping. The low E string had a ton of extra room. When it arrived, I started playing it and instantly noticed that the high E string kept falling off the side of the neck. I did have one issue with a Carvin I bought. I was lucky I live near San Diego so I got to go check them out before ordering. You would have to pay at least 2-3 x as much for some other major brand and PRS won't give you Floyd Rose as an option. I ordered Stainless frets which adds to the smooth feel. Action is super low (I actually raised mine). The fetboard itself is nothing short of magic. The sustain is unreal even with a Floyd Rose! (but maybe you're looking at a carve top if so, never mind). The finish is a good as it gets.the P/U's are so-so.they seem to be bright sounding, which works great for the neck position (as Gonzo points out), but too shrill for the bridge pos. They show no options on their website, but you should ask anyway. You should ask them about how the neck will be shaped and thickness. The neck is a bit thick for my tastes, but I am getting used to it. I had some initial issues, but now I am glad I got it! You can see the pros and cons of ordering one. See my thread: Considering a Carvin ST300.
